Global Warming…..NOT!

group of polar bears on ice

Updated data from NASA satellite instruments reveal the Earth’s polar ice caps have not receded at all since the satellite instruments began measuring the ice caps in 1979. Since the end of 2012, moreover, total polar ice extent has largely remained above the post-1979 average. The updated data contradict one of the most frequently asserted global warming claims – that global warming is causing the polar ice caps to recede.

The timing of the 1979 NASA satellite instrument launch could not have been better for global warming alarmists. The late 1970s marked the end of a 30-year cooling trend. As a result, the polar ice caps were quite likely more extensive than they had been since at least the 1920s. Nevertheless, this abnormally extensive 1979 polar ice extent would appear to be the “normal” baseline when comparing post-1979 polar ice extent.

Updated NASA satellite data show the polar ice caps remained at approximately their 1979 extent until the middle of the last decade. Beginning in 2005, however, polar ice modestly receded for several years. By 2012, polar sea ice had receded by approximately 10 percent from 1979 measurements. (Total polar ice area – factoring in both sea and land ice – had receded by much less than 10 percent, but alarmists focused on the sea ice loss as “proof” of a global warming crisis.)

Ice Free in Summer….

In 2009, then-Sen. John Kerry said, “Scientists project that the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer of 2013.” In that same year, Al Gore reiterated the claim: “Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap during some of the summer months will be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years.” Without ice, polar bears have a tough time surviving, and sadly we had to bid farewell to this wonderful creature a few short years ago because we failed to heed the warning.

Actually, no, that’s not at all true. Not only has the Arctic retained a considerable amount of ice in recent summers, but polar bears are thriving.

Earlier this year, Dr. Susan Crockford of the Global Warming Policy Foundation discovered, “On almost every measure, things are looking good for polar bears. Scientists are finding that they are well distributed throughout their range and adapting well to changes in sea ice. Health indicators are good and they are benefiting from abundant prey.” With roughly 25,000 polar bears estimated to be roaming the Arctic, up from 5,000 in the ’60s, the alarm should over. But it’s not.

According to a new report from the U.S. Geological Survey, computer models suggest nearly one-third of polar bears could be wiped off the planet in 10 years as greenhouse gas emissions rise.

Let’s get this straight: The same scientific lobby that warned decades ago polar bears would be extinct by now — but which instead grew in population — are now telling us that a significant percentage of bears could face eradication within a decade based on computer models. The same computer models that utterly failed to forecast the current 18-year-old global warming hiatus.

Resonable logic would be to change the obviously flawed computer model but apparently the U.S. Geological Survey is not very logical.

Deflating Climate Change

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is dominating the headlines amid allegations of cheating in his team’s 45-7 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts last week. At least he was — Boston still is the subject of most newswires, but for the past two days that was thanks to an ironically well-timed blizzard, not Brady. The real DeflateGate, however, is Barack Obama’s negligence concerning foreign affairs while obsessing over things beyond his control. Last week, Yemen fell hostage to Islamic extremists, the latest in a string of countries whose leadership crumbled to radical uprisings. Nevertheless, terrorism’s expanding influence is not what the president chose to emphasize is civilization’s greatest threat during his State of the Union address. No, that would be a perpetual straw man — global warming.

Shortly after delivering self-congratulatory remarks on his counterterrorism policies, Obama proceeded in his SOTU address to declare, “No challenge — no challenge — poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change.” Really, how crazy must one be to worry about getting blown to smithereens or having your throat slit by maniacal fundamentalists when the oceans might rise a bit within the next century? And here we thought the president already had that situation under control. In 2008, the story was that Obama’s inauguration would mark “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” Six years later, the world is going up in flames, and it’s not because of a man-made fever.

“2014 was the planet’s warmest year on record,” said the lecturer in chief, a statistic that was the conclusion of a new report by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center. According to NOAA, earth’s average temperature last year was 1.24°F above average — sea surface temperatures were the highest on record (1.03°F above average), while land temperatures came in fourth place (1.80°F above average).

Even if we take the government at its word and assume last year was indeed the warmest — since records began in the late 1800s, it’s important to note — the report lacked two particularly big disclaimers.

For starters, last week the Daily Mail revealed, “The margin of error is said by scientists to be approximately 0.1C. … As a result, GISS’s [Goddard Institute for Space Studies] director Gavin Schmidt has now admitted [government officials believe] the likelihood that 2014 was the warmest year since 1880 is just 38 per cent.” Incredibly, the trumpeted “consensus” appears suddenly irrelevant.

Second, Obama’s ensuing remark is simply unfounded: “Now, one year doesn’t make a trend, but this does: 14 of the 15 warmest years on record have all fallen in the first 15 years of this century.” According to Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) satellite data, the staple of modern temperature recordings, the globe has experienced no observable warming now for more than 18 years. NOAA omitted that inconvenient truth, however, because the nearly two-decade long hiatus doesn’t fit the narrative.

It seems Mother Nature presents a twist every time envirofascists open their petulant mouths — and indeed, drivers on Monday’s snarled I-95 corridor would have enjoyed some global warming. Tom Brady may be tossing under-inflated footballs, but the narcissist in chief has been prematurely spiking the ball ever since he entered the Oval Office, all while destroying our Liberty, one policy at a time. Unless America begins taking seriously the real DeflateGate, the only thing we’ll be left with is a Hail Mary.

EPA’s Rules Could Destroy Coal

The EPA’s official report was released Friday: “New large natural gas-fired turbines would need to meet a limit of 1,000 pounds of CO2 per megawatt-hour, while new small natural gas-fired turbines would need to meet a limit of 1,100 pounds of CO2 per megawatt-hour. New coal-fired units would need to meet a limit of 1,100 pounds of CO2 per megawatt-hour.”

The result will be intentionally disastrous for coal-powered plants that will now be forced to install costly carbon capture technology. “No coal-fired power plant has done that yet, in large part because of the cost,” observes The Wall Street Journal. “And those plants that the EPA points to as potential models … have received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants and tax credits.”

Imagine that: An expensive (and likely subpar) technology in need of a government subsidy. We have a good idea how this will turn out.

Perhaps the most egregious comments come from EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. While testifying last week before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, McCarthy was asked what effect any of the EPA’s 26 climate regulations have had on curbing global warming. “It’s unlikely that any specific one step is going to be seen as having … a visible change in any of those [indicators],” McCarthy admitted.

So let’s get this straight: An administration working to “save the planet” from “climate change” admits it’s likely none of the regulations have done anything to actually curb warming. And yet, the answer is to instate more carbon rules. This administration will do whatever it takes to destroy the coal industry in service to its leftist ideology.

Sinking ‘Climate Change’

by Cal Thomas

Three modern myths have been sold to the American people: the promise of a transparent
administration (President Obama); the promise of a more ethical Congress (Speaker Pelosi);
and the myth of “global warming,” or climate change.

The first two are daily proving suspect and now the third is sinking with greater force than
melting icebergs, if they were melting, which many believe they are not.

After spending years promoting “global warming,” the media are beginning to turn in the face of
growing evidence that they have been wrong. The London Times recently reported: “Britain’s
premier scientific institution is being forced to review its statements on climate change after
a rebellion by members who question mankind’s contribution to rising temperatures.”

It gets worse, or better, depending on your perspective. Newsweek magazine, which more than
30 years ago promoted global cooling and a new ice age — and more recently has been drinking
the global warming Kool-Aid — headlined a story, “Uncertain Science: Bickering and Defensive,
Climate Researchers Have Lost the Public’s Trust.” Newsweek does its best to cling to its
increasingly discredited doctrine, but the growing body of contrary evidence only adds to
the public’s disbelief.

In Canada, the polar bear — which has been used by global warming promoters to put a cuddly
face on the issue — is in danger of not being endangered any longer. CBC News reported that
the polar bear’s designation as a “species of special concern” has been suspended “while the
government reviews the polar bear’s status and decides whether to renew the classification or
change it.”

The New York Times recently lamented “global warmism’s loss of credibility” in a story about
hundreds of environmental activists who met to ponder this question: “if the scientific
consensus on climate change has not changed, why have so many people turned away from the
idea that human activity is warming the planet?” The “consensus” never was a consensus. Most
of us may not have gotten an “A” in science, but we can sense when we are being bamboozled.

The German online news magazine “Focus” recently carried a story, “Warm Times Will Soon Be
Over!” Commenting on the “new NASA high temperature record,” which may be set, the magazine
blames it on El Nino. Meteorologists, like Joe D’Aleo of The Weather Channel, are publicly
distancing themselves from the false doctrine of global warming. D’Aleo says, “We’ll have La
Nina conditions before the summer is over, and it will intensify further through the fall and
winter. Thus we’ll have cooler temperatures for the next couple of years.”

Remember the scare ignited in 2007 by supposed melting Arctic ice caps? The Star Canada says
a new analysis shows that the apparent change was the result of “shifting winds,” while an
expedition last year to the North Pole discovered the ice “100 percent thicker than expected.”

Much of this information — and more — is available at the useful Website www.climatedepot.com.

It is a given that America needs new sources of energy. Environmentalists have inhibited
efforts at exploration by supporting policies that have forced some domestic exploration too
far offshore (thus increasing chances of an ecological disaster as is occurring in the Gulf
of Mexico).

Instead of trying to sell us a dubious doctrine at an estimated cost of $100 billion a year
worldwide (so far), environmentalists would have done themselves and the world more good had
they chosen a different strategy, such as not sending oil money to countries that want to
destroy us. This would have increased our patriotic spirit and had the additional benefit of
not only diversifying our energy supply, but also depriving our enemies of money they use to
underwrite terrorism.

Watch for the hardcore “global warming” cultists to continue clinging to their beliefs; but
also watch increasing numbers of scientists and eventually politicians to abandon this once
“certain” faith and to look for other ways to control our lives. In that pursuit, the left
never quits. Rather than acknowledge their error, they will go on to make new mistakes, knowing
they will never be held accountable.
